The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed that the automation of passport applications in Nigeria is on the verge of completion, reaching 99%.
The system is expected to go live next week, streamlining the passport application process.
Tunji-Ojo explained that the automation would enable Nigerians to complete most passport application tasks from the comfort of their homes, including uploading passport photos and supporting documents.
He emphasized that the only in-person requirement would be biometric data capture at an immigration center.
He also shared that 204,322 international passports are now ready for collection out of a backlog of over 300,000, marking progress in addressing the challenges encountered upon assuming office.
The minister also restated his promise that by February 2024, all Nigerian international airports would have e-gates.
