The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declined to sign the peace accord for the upcoming Edo State governorship election, which is scheduled for September 21. The announcement was made on Thursday by former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar during the peace accord signing ceremony held in Benin.
Abubakar revealed that the PDP indicated they would only sign the peace accord if specific conditions were met. “I met the governor yesterday and he informed me that the PDP would not be signing the peace accord,” Abubakar said.
He explained that the PDP had made certain observations and required that their conditions be addressed before they would agree to sign. The party stated that they would return to Abuja to sign once their conditions were fulfilled.
The chairman of the PDP in Edo State was not present at the event to elaborate on the party’s reasons for not signing the accord. However, Governor Godwin Obaseki had previously suggested that the PDP might not sign the accord during a meeting with the National Peace Committee.
Despite the PDP’s refusal to sign, other parties have committed to the peace process. The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Monday Okpebholo, as well as the Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, were among those who signed the peace accord.
