Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed grave concern over the recent deadly attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack, which left entire families dead, has sparked widespread mourning across several communities. Obi condemned the senseless violence and highlighted the tragic loss of lives, particularly among children and pregnant women, who were buried in mass graves.
In a statement shared on Friday via X, Obi condemned the killings that affected five communities Mangor Tamiso, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti, and Tadai. The violence, he said, resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians, with reports stating that at least five people were killed, and 18 others were injured.
“I woke up this morning to read yet another horrifying and deeply distressing report from Bokkos. Entire families have been slaughtered, and children and pregnant women were not spared,” Obi said, expressing his shock and sorrow over the incident. He also questioned the growing wave of violence that seems to be sweeping across the country, raising concerns about the normalization of such brutal acts.
“How long will these killings, kidnappings, maimings, and criminal activities continue in our nation, which is not at war? How many more innocent lives must be lost before the government takes decisive action?” Obi asked, urging the government to prioritize the safety and security of Nigerian citizens.
The former Anambra State governor, who has long advocated for justice and security reforms, lamented the increasing insecurity in Nigerian communities. He pointed out that people across the country, from Benue to Enugu, Ondo, and Anambra, are living in constant fear, unable to engage in basic activities like farming and trade due to the pervasive threat of violence.
“Communities like Bokkos in Plateau, Jato-Aka in Benue, Eha-Amufu in Enugu, Ufuma in Anambra, and Aba Oyinbo in Ondo deserve government protection,” Obi stated. “This ongoing terror is unacceptable and must end. We cannot continue to watch as lives are lost senselessly.”
The former presidential hopeful called on both the government and security agencies to take immediate and decisive action to end these killings. He urged that perpetrators be swiftly brought to justice to prevent future tragedies.
“The government and security agencies must ensure that these killings stop immediately. Concrete steps must be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again, and those responsible must face justice,” Obi added.
In conclusion, Obi offered his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families in Bokkos and other affected communities. He stressed that no Nigerian should live in fear and urged the government to take all necessary measures to protect its citizens.
The attack in Bokkos began on Wednesday when gunmen stormed Tamiso village while women were gathered for a Christian fellowship meeting at a COCIN church. The attackers fired indiscriminately, causing widespread panic and displacement among residents.
