Former Anambra State Governor and politician Peter Obi has called on the administration of President Bola Tinubu to involve Nigerian citizens in a national debate before passing the controversial tax reform bills into law. Obi made the appeal in a statement on his official X account on Monday.
While acknowledging the importance of the tax reforms for the country’s development, Obi emphasized that such significant changes must undergo thorough public discussions before any final decisions are made. He argued that tax reform is a crucial issue, but it should not be rushed or decided behind closed doors.
“A public hearing on tax reform is essential,” Obi stated. “It will allow Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully, build public trust, and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.” He stressed that deliberating on issues of this magnitude would ensure that a wide range of opinions are taken into account, making the policymaking process more transparent and democratic.
Obi further pointed out that tax reforms should not be viewed solely from the perspective of government revenue generation but also from the broader impact on the nation’s regions and citizens. He emphasized the need for the government to engage in public sensitization to secure the people’s support for any policy changes.
“Trust and legitimacy are the foundation of effective governance,” Obi continued. “Without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail. Let us prioritize transparency, deliberation, and public engagement in charting the path forward.” He concluded by stressing that this approach would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and make it more participatory.
The Tax Reform Bills have sparked significant debate since their introduction, with some northern governors calling for their withdrawal, adding to the growing controversy surrounding the proposed reforms.
