Petrol Price Hike: NANS Ready to Meet Tinubu, Dialogues with Dangote, Oil Marketers, Lokpobiri

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed its willingness to meet with President Bola Tinubu to discuss its concerns over the recent increase in the price of Petrol Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. David Bariereka, the Secretary of NANS, shared this information during an interview in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Bariereka stated that the student body is currently engaging with key figures in the petroleum sector, including businessman Aliko Dangote, oil marketers, and the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), to find a solution to the rising fuel prices, which have intensified public hardship.

Despite these discussions, NANS remains firm on its plan to organize a nationwide protest against the petrol price hike, scheduled for September 15, 2024. Henry Okuomo, the Senate President of NANS, emphasized the union’s commitment to holding the government accountable, citing the severe impact of the price increase on students and the general public.

Okuomo stated, “We are not issuing threats; we are preparing to take action due to the dire situation in the country. The recent fuel price increase has exacerbated the hardships faced by Nigerians, including students. As leaders representing over 40 million students, we have a duty to advocate for the people.”

Initially, NANS had called for the removal of the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), Mele Kyari. However, Bariereka has since advised students to disregard any immediate calls for protest. He emphasized that the association is currently focused on negotiation and dialogue, seeking to resolve the issue through engagement rather than confrontation.

Bariereka acknowledged the significant challenges faced by Nigerians due to the fuel price hike and reaffirmed NANS’ commitment to advocating for students’ rights. He highlighted the success of their previous campaign against electricity bill increases, which led to the formation of a committee to explore solar energy options for Nigerian universities.

Students are encouraged to stay patient and await further instructions from the NANS national secretariat regarding the next steps in response to the fuel price increase.
