In preparation for the upcoming local government elections in Plateau State, scheduled for October 9, 2024, the state government has declared Wednesday a work-free day.
This announcement was made on Monday by Samuel Jatau, the Secretary to the State Government.
The work-free day aims to facilitate public servants’ travel to their respective local government areas, allowing all eligible voters to participate in the elections. Additionally, Emmanuel Adesina, the state Commissioner of Police, has imposed a restriction on movement across the state from midnight to 6 PM on Wednesday.
During a stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, Commissioner Adesina emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for voters. He stated that the movement restriction is intended to prevent potential security threats and ensure that voters can cast their ballots without fear or intimidation.
Adesina urged politicians to avoid inflammatory statements and work together to foster a peaceful electoral process. He acknowledged that while the restriction of movement may cause some inconvenience, it is a necessary measure to safeguard the safety and security of all voters.
The stakeholders’ meeting, held at the Police Officers’ Mess in Jos, brought together religious leaders, youth groups, political party representatives, and women’s organizations, highlighting a collaborative effort to ensure a smooth electoral process in Plateau State.
