Police Probe Alleged Arson of Vast Cassava Farm in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a disturbing case of arson involving cattle herders accused of setting fire to a large cassava farm in Adao Village, near Alabata in Abeokuta, the state capital. The incident, which took place on February 19, 2025, has raised serious concerns of escalating tensions in the area.

CSP Omolola Odutola, the command’s spokesperson, revealed that the incident came to light when Mr. Ogunbayo Adewale of Raka Village reported to the police on February 20, 2025, that upon visiting his 35-acre cassava farm, he found it had been engulfed in flames.

In addition to the destruction caused by the fire, several herds of cattle were spotted grazing on the scorched land, and numerous cassava plants had been uprooted.

According to the complainant, when the herders saw him, they ordered the cattle to flee, but he was able to apprehend one of the cows and bring it to the police station as evidence.

This act of defiance against the damage to his livelihood has led to a swift police response, with the Divisional Police Officer of FUNAAB Harmony quickly mobilizing grassroots officers to quell rising tensions and prevent any potential tribal conflict from spiraling out of control.

Preliminary investigations have begun, with the police already identifying the owner of the seized cow. The complainant has estimated the damage to his farm at a staggering N27.3 million.

The case has now been transferred to the surveillance section for a deeper inquiry, ensuring a thorough and unbiased investigation.

In a statement, CSP Odutola reassured the public that justice will be served, urging all parties involved to remain calm as the investigation progresses.

The police command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order, preventing inter-group violence, and safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
