Poll suggests Trump, Harris in a tie ahead of first presidential debate

The US presidential race remains a tight contest, with recent polls indicating a near-even split between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump just two days before their first, and potentially only, televised debate.

Despite his historic status as a convicted criminal and his controversial role in the 2020 election aftermath, Trump maintains robust support, with polls showing him leading Harris by a narrow margin. A New York Times/Siena College poll reveals Trump, at 78 years old, holds a slight lead over Harris, 59, with a 48 to 47 percent edge nationally well within the margin of error.

Harris, who entered the race following President Biden’s withdrawal in July, has rapidly gained traction but has yet to secure a decisive breakthrough. The race remains a toss-up, as Harris shows narrow leads in key swing states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, and is tied in Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, and Arizona.

The election is marked by unprecedented chaos, including Biden’s withdrawal amid age-related concerns, Trump’s narrow escape from an assassination attempt, and increasing worries about whether Trump would concede if he loses. Despite these turbulent developments, both candidates have managed to retain a remarkably stable base of supporters.

The upcoming debate on Tuesday, broadcast by ABC News, will be a critical moment. Trump, known for his provocative rhetoric, will face scrutiny as he debates Harris, who aims to become the first female president and is presenting a message of optimism and progress in contrast to Trump’s dire predictions of national decline.

Harris has faced criticism for her campaign’s perceived vagueness and lack of concrete policies.

In response to mounting pressure, her campaign released a detailed policy page on Sunday, addressing key issues such as unions, cost-of-living, and healthcare.

The outcome of the debate could prove pivotal in swaying undecided voters and shaping the final stretch of the campaign as both candidates vie for crucial swing states and a decisive advantage in the race for the White House.
