Pope Francis Still in Critical Condition – Vatican

Pope Francis, the 88-year-old spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, remains in critical condition following his hospitalization for a severe lung infection, but the Vatican has assured the public that there have been no “further respiratory crises.” On Sunday, the Vatican confirmed that although his health is precarious, the pope’s condition has not worsened since Saturday when he was reported to be in critical condition after a week-long battle with pneumonia.

Doctors continue to monitor the pope’s health closely. He is still on supplemental oxygen, with tests revealing “initial, mild” kidney failure.

However, the Vatican stressed that the situation is being managed effectively, and the pope is both conscious and alert, with a clear understanding of his surroundings.

While his prognosis remains “reserved,” the Vatican refrained from offering predictions, emphasizing that the complexity of his clinical condition demands caution and patience as drug therapies take effect.

Though his condition is serious, doctors have reassured the public that Pope Francis is not in immediate danger, though he is far from being out of harm’s way.

His treatment plan includes blood transfusions to address anemia and ongoing medical support for his pneumonia, which has affected both of his lungs.

In an Angelus statement shared by the Vatican, Pope Francis expressed gratitude for the public’s prayers and support, specifically as he approaches the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

The pontiff, who remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, acknowledged the tireless efforts of his medical team, thanking them for their care and dedication. “Rest is part of my therapy,” he said with a hopeful tone. “I am confident in my treatment and I thank the doctors and healthcare workers for their attention and service.”

Despite the challenges, Pope Francis’s resilience continues to shine through, as he remains deeply involved in matters of faith and world events even while facing significant health battles.

With prayers from millions around the globe, the Church watches with hope as its beloved pope continues his journey to recovery.
