After winning Player of the Match in Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Ecuador in their second Group A match of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic, Flamingos striker Harmony Chidi express her delight.
At Estadio Cibao, Santiago de Los Caballeros, on Saturday night, Chidi lived up to the hype by scoring Nigeria’s second goal in the 54th minute as Bankole Olowookere’s team continued their outstanding performances in the South American country. Chidi did not score in Nigeria’s first 4-1 victory over New Zealand.
Reacting to her fine performance capped by the prestigious award, the young striker said, “I am the happiest person on earth because this is a dream come true. I’m very happy, and I bless God for it. I don’t know how to express this because I am filled with joy right now. When it seemed like it wasn’t working, my coach and teammates encouraged me to do well.
“I also want to thank Nigerians for their support, and I believe that myself and my teammates will make it count.”
Nigeria will hope to make it three wins from as many games and end the group stage with a 100 per cent record when they face the Dominican Republic in their final group game at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez, Santo Domingo, on Wednesday.
The Flamingos finished third in the last edition in India and have participated in every edition of the competition since its inception in 2008, reaching the quarterfinals in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
