President Bola Tinubu, represented by Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, reiterated Nigeria’s capacity to achieve food self-sufficiency and even become a net exporter of food items to neighboring African countries.
This announcement came during a meeting with the 36 governors of the federation in Abuja.
Tinubu emphasized that importing food items to address the soaring cost of food production is not an option for the current administration.
Instead, the government is committed to leveraging Nigeria’s agricultural potential to bolster domestic food security and stimulate economic growth.
“A decision has been taken that in the interest of our country, there will be no need for food importation at this point,” declared Tinubu.
He underscored the importance of reversing the challenges faced in food production, expressing confidence that Nigeria can overcome current difficulties and emerge stronger in the long run.
The president’s remarks signal a strategic shift towards promoting self-reliance and sustainability in food production, aligning with the government’s broader agenda to enhance agricultural productivity and reduce dependency on imports.
By prioritizing domestic food production and encouraging investment in the agricultural sector, Nigeria aims to harness its vast resources and capitalize on its potential to become a leading food producer and exporter in the region.
