Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Afrobeats sensation Tems following her victory at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, won the Best African Music Performance category for her song “Love Me Jeje.”

In a statement released by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Tems’ achievement, calling it “deserving” and a proud moment for Nigeria. The president acknowledged Tems’ unique artistry and her contribution to elevating Nigeria’s global standing through her music.

Tinubu also recognized the collective achievements of Nigerian artists in driving Afrobeats to international prominence, highlighting the genre’s role in projecting Nigeria as a cultural powerhouse. He noted that Nigerian music has become a source of national pride, uniting people globally and promoting Nigerian identity.

While Tems was the only Nigerian artist to take home an award this year, Tinubu expressed pride in the other Nigerian nominees, including Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, Lojay, Davido, and Burna Boy. He applauded their contributions to the global music industry, creative excellence, job creation, and tourism.

The president also encouraged these artists, saying, “You are all inspiration and role models to many young people. The nation remains deeply grateful for your contributions to music, job creation, and tourism promotion.”

Tems’ win has sparked widespread celebrations, including from political figures such as Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Obi took to social media to congratulate the artist on securing her second Grammy, emphasizing her role in representing Nigerian talent on the world stage.

This recognition further cements Tems’ position as one of the leading voices in Afrobeats, continuing to shine a global spotlight on Nigerian music.
