President Tinubu Mourns Soldiers Killed in ISWAP Attack in Borno, Calls for Increased Military Action

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences following the tragic death of six soldiers in a terrorist attack on an army base in Sabon Gida, Damboa, Borno State.

The attack, which took place on January 4, was carried out by members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), who launched a pre-dawn assault on the base using trucks and motorcycles.

The attackers set fire to the base and army vehicles, according to military sources who spoke anonymously. Fighter jets were deployed from Maiduguri, the regional capital located approximately 100 kilometers away, to strike the retreating terrorists.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga on Thursday, President Tinubu conveyed his deepest sympathies to the military, acknowledging the bravery of the fallen soldiers. The President called for a comprehensive investigation into the attack, emphasizing the importance of uncovering the circumstances behind the incident to prevent future attacks.

“This resolute action by the Army demonstrates the capability and readiness of our military to confront and defeat threats to our nation’s security. Their actions testify to our resolve to eradicate terrorism and banditry, paving the way for a future where peace and security prevail for all Nigerians,” Tinubu said.

The President also commended the swift response of the armed forces, particularly the air component, which launched effective retaliatory strikes that led to the neutralization of numerous terrorists and the destruction of their assets.

Tinubu emphasized the need for proactive military operations, particularly in the Northwest, where terrorists and bandits continue to pose a significant threat to innocent civilians. He urged Nigerians and the media to support the military in its efforts to restore peace and security across the nation.

In his message, the Commander-in-Chief extended heartfelt gratitude to the military and security forces, acknowledging their sacrifices and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country. He assured the armed forces that the nation stands firmly behind them in the ongoing fight to eliminate terrorism and banditry.
