A committee tasked with probing the finances of Kaduna State during the tenure of Nasir el-Rufai, the immediate former governor, has commenced its investigation.
Announced by the Kaduna State Assembly in April, the 13-member committee is mandated to scrutinize loans, grants, and project implementation from 2015 to 2023, the period encompassing el-Rufai’s governorship.
Suraj Bamalli, the media aide to Yusuf Liman, the Speaker of the Kaduna Assembly, confirmed the commencement of the investigation in a statement on Tuesday.
The statement highlighted that the committee has initiated clarification sessions and engaged with key present and past government officials, including former Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce, Honorable Manzo Maigari, and former Commissioner and Administrator of Zaria Metropolitan Authority, Hajia Balaraba Aliyu, among others.
The Kaduna State House of Assembly expressed gratitude for the cooperation of individuals involved and affirmed its commitment to upholding governance standards throughout the investigation.
Governor Uba Sani had previously disclosed inheriting significant debt and contractual liabilities from el-Rufai’s administration, amounting to $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities, which has reportedly strained the state’s monthly federation allocation
