Protesters Plan ‘Fearless in October’ Demonstration Following #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria Movement

Organizers of the recently concluded #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protest, which took place nationwide from August 1 to 10, 2024, are preparing for another round of demonstrations in October. Damilare Adenola, the Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, confirmed the planned protests during an interview on Monday.

The upcoming protests, dubbed the “Fearless in October Protest,” will focus on the same set of demands presented during the previous demonstrations, with the possibility of adding new issues if the country’s situation continues to deteriorate. “Yes. It is called the ‘Fearless in October Protest’. Our charter of demands stands as same. If at all, we will add more as the country decays more,” Adenola stated.

The #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests saw youth across the country, including in the Federal Capital Territory, taking to the streets despite government officials’ efforts to dissuade them. The protesters had earlier submitted a list of demands to the government, which included the abolition of the Senate, making law-making a part-time job for members of the House of Representatives, raising the minimum wage to N250,000, reversing fuel prices and electricity tariffs to their pre-January 2023 levels, and releasing and compensating all EndSARS and political detainees.

When asked about complying with court orders that state governments may issue, requiring the protesters to hold demonstrations at designated locations, Adenola was firm in his stance. “We won’t accept the compliance,” he asserted.

Additionally, human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju revealed that efforts are currently focused on securing the release of protesters who were arrested during the August demonstrations.

The “Fearless in October Protest” is expected to continue the momentum from the August demonstrations, as citizens push for significant changes in governance and social justice across Nigeria.
