The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 27 senior Police Officers, including 11 Commissioners of Police who have been elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIG) and 16 Deputy Commissioners of Police who have been promoted to the substantive rank of Commissioners of Police.
In a statement, PSC spokesman Ikechukwu Ani announced the approval, which was made public by the Commission’s Chairman, Hashimu Argungu. According to Argungu, both written and oral examinations will now be mandatory prerequisites for promotion across all ranks in the Nigeria Police Force.
The newly promoted officers underwent the required written and oral examinations at the PSC Corporate Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, December 16, 2024. The Commission’s chairman emphasized the importance of continuous professional development for police officers, highlighting the need to embrace global best practices, including technological proficiency.
Among the 11 newly promoted Assistant Inspectors General of Police are: Umar Shehu Nadada (Nasarawa), Mustapha Mohammed Bala (Rivers), Abayomi Peter Oladipo (Ondo), Taiwo Olatunde Adeleke (SWAT, FCID Abuja), Ibrahim Abdullahi (Kaduna), and Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka (Force Headquarters, Abuja), among others.
The 16 Deputy Commissioners of Police promoted to the rank of Commissioners include: Kayode Ojapinwa (SCID, FCT), Emmanuel Ighodalo (ZCID, Zone 8, Lokoja), Bose Funmi Akinyemi (SEB, FCID Annex, Lagos), Barayimil Ahmadu Samaila (DFA, Kogi), and Shetima Jauro Mohammed (SCID, Nasarawa), among others.
DIG Taiwo Lakanu, a Commissioner on the PSC and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Police Promotions, conducted the rigorous oral interviews. He urged the newly promoted officers to prioritize the responsibilities of their new ranks, stressing the importance of dedication and excellence in service. Lakanu also reassured the officers that the Commission would continue to ensure that promotions are both timely and merit-based.
