Rachel Reeves becomes first woman UK finance minister
Britain’s new Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, on Friday appointed Rachel Reeves as the country’s first female finance minister on Friday, following Labour’s decisive victory in the UK general election.
Reeves, 45, who started her career in banking, now assumes the role of Chancellor of the Exchequer after Labour’s centre-left party ended the Conservative Party’s 14-year rule.
“It is the honor of my life to have been appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer,” Reeves announced on the social media platform X following her appointment by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“To every young girl and woman reading this, let today show that there should be no limits on your ambitions.”
Labour’s election manifesto centered on economic growth and wealth creation as primary government priorities, signaling a departure from its traditionally leftist policies.
“Economic growth was the Labour Party’s mission,” Reeves emphasized on Friday. “It is now a national mission. Let’s get to work,”
