Referees will now explain VAR decisions to fans both in the stands and at home during the Italian Cup semi-finals and final, Serie A announced on Monday.
For the two-legged semi-finals, which include a Milan derby, as well as the final in May, Serie A will test audio technology that allows referees to communicate their decisions directly to fans. This technology will be used to explain decisions made after on-field reviews, where referees, following a prompt from the VAR control room, check their original call on a pitch-side screen.
Additionally, starting this weekend, Serie A fixtures will introduce “VARDict,” a system that will inform fans via big screens at stadiums when a VAR decision is being reviewed or when a lengthy VAR check is underway.
