Reps Committee Cautions Lawmaker Over Taiwan Remarks, Reaffirms Nigeria’s One-China Policy

The House of Representative Committee on China-Nigeria Parliamentary Relations has issued a formal caution to Hon. Sanya Omirin, the federal lawmaker representing Atakunmosa East/West and Ilesa East/West constituencies in Osun State, following his recent comments advocating for collaboration with the “Taiwanese government” during a workshop organized by the Taipei Trade Office in Iperindo, Osun State.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Committee Chairman Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu emphasized that Nigeria does not recognize any entity referred to as the “Taiwanese government.” He clarified that the Taipei Trade Office in Nigeria operates solely as a non-diplomatic, commercial entity and does not represent a government.

Hon. Yakubu reminded Hon. Omirin that Taiwan is considered an integral part of China, and Nigeria’s foreign policy aligns with the One-China Principle, which has been a cornerstone of the nation’s diplomatic relations since 1971.

He further stated that any suggestion of collaboration with a “Taiwanese government” contradicts Nigeria’s foreign policy and could undermine the strong bilateral ties with China.

The Committee called on all public officials to exercise caution in their statements and engagements with foreign entities to avoid misrepresenting Nigeria’s diplomatic positions.

Hon. Yakubu reiterated that Nigeria remains committed to supporting China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the One-China Principle in all diplomatic and international engagements.

This development underscores Nigeria’s steadfast position on the One-China Policy and the importance of maintaining consistent and respectful diplomatic relations with China.
