Reps may clash over Tinubu’s $2.2bn fresh loan on Tuesday

A confrontation is anticipated in the House of Representatives this week, as lawmakers from both the ruling party and opposition parties prepare to clash over President Bola Tinubu’s $2.2 million (N1.77 trillion) loan request.

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House, Philip Agbese, however, has expressed confidence that the Green Chamber will have no issue approving the external borrowing request.

The loan request, submitted by President Tinubu, was presented to the House and read aloud by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during Tuesday’s plenary session. If approved, the loan will be used to cover the N9.7 trillion deficit in the 2024 budget. While the Senate has already approved the request, the House is set to debate the matter and make a decision later this week.

In an interview with newsmen, Agbese, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Media and Publicity, outlined why he believes the House will follow the Senate’s lead in approving the loan.

He emphasized that the House would not hesitate to approve the request, as long as the funds are allocated for the execution of capital projects across the country, as outlined in the President’s letter to the National Assembly.
