Reps panel invites UNIZIK VC over alleged poor project execution

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has invited Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, the acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra, over alleged poor project execution.

The Chairman of the Committee Abubakar Fulata, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Following the committee’s last visit to UNIZIK in Awka, the invitation was sent out, clarifying that it was not a witch hunt for the VC.
He said that the committee would not stand by and permit certain actions to continue that would prevent the anticipated advancement in the country’s institutions.

The committee noted that the information contained in the VC’s supplied documents did not correspond with actual project implementation realities.

Fulata questioned how the university’s administration, who claimed to have made N1.5 billion the year before, could justify spending over N3 billion of that same amount of money on internal revenue.

According to Fulata, using public funds without parliamentary approval is a flagrant transgression of the constitution.

He claimed that the university’s management staff is compromised when fabricated figures are presented.

The committee stated that several Nigerians’ calls and worries that several MDAs would perform better if legislators performed their duties as expected led to the necessity of the oversight visit.

The committee said that if resources from before were used carelessly, there would be no reason to approve funding for any government agency.

The committee said it observed several discrepancies and infractions in the documents presented, urging the VC to appear before them in the National Assembly with relevant documents for further legislative action.
