The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to provide urgent relief materials to the Ekeke and Amoya-Otuo communities in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, which were recently devastated by flooding.
This resolution came after a motion of urgent public importance, sponsored by the House Leader, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, was adopted during Wednesday’s plenary.
In supporting the motion, Ihonvbere expressed concern over the severe flooding disaster in Ekeke-Erah and the massive windstorm that affected Ake, Amoya-Otuo, and other communities in Owan East Local Government Area. He noted the widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure—including a bridge in Ekeke—farmlands, and livelihoods. “The House notes that the affected communities have been plunged into total darkness due to the floods that downed electric poles and damaged solar streetlights,” he said.
He further emphasized that the affected areas urgently need emergency assistance, including relief food, medical supplies, and the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.
Ihonvbere also commended the response of the Edo State Government, the Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly, and the local government, but stressed that the scale of the disaster requires additional support from the Federal Government.
The motion received overwhelming support from lawmakers during Wednesday’s plenary and was subsequently adopted. The House then urged NEMA to provide immediate relief materials to the affected communities, including food, water, blankets, mats, shelter, and medical supplies.
Additionally, the House called on the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to respond swiftly to the needs of the residents of Ekeke-Erah, Ake, Amoya-Otuo, and other communities impacted by the disasters.
