Rescuers find debris field near Titanic in search for missing submersible

A “debris field” has been discovered by an underwater robot searching near the wreck of the Titanic for a missing submersible with five people on board, rescuers said Thursday.

Experts within the unified command are evaluating the information, USCG added.

Three vessels had earlier arrived to join the search for the missing submersible named Titan including a vessel which has technology that can detect and map out objects on the seafloor.

The search exceeded the critical 96-hour mark on Thursday morning when oxygen was estimated to have run out.

The estimate is based on the number of hours of oxygen the craft had for the five people on board and the time it submerged (1 pm UK time on Sunday).

However, experts say the projected supply of breathable air could be longer if the passengers have taken measures to conserve oxygen. It is unclear if there are still survivors.

On Wednesday, a Canadian P-3 aircraft, part of the rescue team, detected banging sounds underwater in the search area but efforts to trace the source have been unsuccessful.
