The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced that it has received the updated voters’ register for the state from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ahead of the local government elections scheduled for August 9, 2025.
The commission also confirmed the receipt of the list of registered political parties in Nigeria from INEC.
RSIEC’s Commissioner for Media and Civic Education, Tamunótonye Tobins, made the disclosure in a statement issued on Thursday evening in Port Harcourt, confirming that both crucial documents were provided to the state electoral body on March 13, 2025.
With these key materials now in hand, RSIEC has emphasized that preparations are well underway for the upcoming local government elections.
Tobins reassured stakeholders, political parties, and the citizens of Rivers State that the commission is committed to ensuring the conduct of a credible, free, and fair election on the scheduled date.
“The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission is pleased to inform all stakeholders, political parties, and the citizens of the state that, as part of our ongoing preparations for the upcoming local government elections, we have received the updated Voters Register for Rivers State along with the current list of Registered Political Parties in Nigeria from INEC,” the statement reads.
The RSIEC Chairman and Members have reaffirmed their dedication to holding an election that is transparent and fair for all, ahead of the August 9, 2025, polls.
It is worth noting that one of the key reasons the Supreme Court annulled the previous local government election in 2024 was the failure of INEC to provide the updated voters’ register to RSIEC, a situation that has now been rectified.
