Russia declares Estonian PM Kaja Kallas ‘Wanted’

Russia has taken a historic stand on Tuesday, against its Baltic neighbors by labeling Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as “wanted” on criminal accusations.

Kallas, who has been the leader of Estonia since 2021, was marked as “wanted,” yet it was not immediately apparent reason for the allegation.

Moscow had summoned ambassadors from its three Baltic neighbors earlier in February, alleging that they were attempting to “sabotage” the Russian presidential election that is scheduled for next month.

There has been no immediate reaction from Estonia since the announcement.

EU member Estonia, which is home to a sizeable Russian minority, has maintained a tense relationship with Moscow since the end of the Cold War.

Russia has frequently criticized Estonia for removing Soviet-era war monuments, which Tallinn sees as unwelcome symbols of its occupation under the USSR.

The Russian interior ministry’s database of wanted people showed Kallas as “wanted under the Criminal Code” without naming the charges, accompanied by a picture of the leader.
