Scores feared dead as security outfit storms gunmen, kidnappers’ den

Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s security outfit, Agunechemba, has raided the operational base of gunmen and kidnappers, leaving several feared dead. Some of the criminals fled with varying degrees of injuries, while a significant number of firearms and other items were recovered.

Since its formation, modeled after the “Bakassi Boys” during the tenure of the late Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju, Agunechemba has successfully dismantled at least six criminal camps. The operation took place in the early hours of Thursday around 1 a.m. at Enugu-Agidi in the Njikoka local government area.

The joint operation, which included the Police, DSS, Military, and other security agencies such as the “Udo Ga Achi” and Agunechemba troops, was based on actionable intelligence. One of the gunmen was also apprehended during the raid.

Among the items recovered were two AK-47 rifles, eight pump-action guns, four locally-made pistols, 101 cartridges in three packets, four empty AK-47 magazines, three cutlasses, one Baofeng radio, one motorcycle, and several charms.

Anambra has been plagued by rising insecurity, with numerous killings and random kidnappings reported. Although Anambra police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga could not be reached for comment, a Senior Police Officer in the state confirmed the operation, stating it was a joint effort led by the Police Command, based on intelligence gathering.
