The Senate has confirmed Sylvester Nwakuche as the new Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).
His appointment, made by President Bola Tinubu on December 13, 2024, follows the retirement of Haliru Nababa.
The confirmation came after the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, presented its report for consideration. Lawmakers unanimously approved the committee’s recommendation during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, officially announced the confirmation and tasked Nwakuche with the vital responsibility of securing correctional facilities across the country.
Akpabio expressed hope that under Nwakuche’s leadership, the frequent occurrences of jailbreaks would be brought to an end.
This charge follows the recent escape of 12 individuals from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, on Monday, which resulted in the death of one correctional officer.
