The Nigerian Senate has established a six-man ad-hoc committee tasked with investigating recent allegations against Senator Ashiru Oyelola, who represents Kwara South. The committee is expected to summon the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to provide explanations regarding the accusations that have been levied against the senator.
These allegations arose after the NDLEA reportedly raided Senator Ashiru’s residence in Ilorin, Kwara State, where illicit drugs were allegedly discovered. This incident occurred shortly after Senator Ashiru made remarks during a Senate debate on October 15 regarding a Bill aimed at establishing the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation. During his contribution, the senator characterized the NDLEA as “the most corrupt and compromised agency,” prompting the agency’s subsequent actions.
On October 21, Senator Ashiru utilized Order 42 to address the NDLEA’s press statement, which he claimed was an act of witch-hunting. He accused the agency of targeting him for personal attacks, arguing that the allegations undermined his privilege as a senator and his right to participate in debates on the Senate floor. Ashiru further asserted that the NDLEA’s actions were an attempt to intimidate the Senate and restrict its ability to discuss national issues freely.
Senate President, while acknowledging the timing of the allegations as questionable, refrained from making any premature judgments. Following a voice vote, the lawmakers agreed to take appropriate actions based on the recommendations provided by the newly formed ad-hoc committee, which is expected to report back within one week.
