Senate Orders Halt to Property Demolitions in Abuja

The Nigerian Senate has directed Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to immediately suspend all ongoing property demolitions in Abuja. This decision was prompted by growing concerns over the alleged irregularities and hardships caused by the demolitions.

The Senate also summoned Wike to appear before an ad hoc committee tasked with investigating the demolitions. Chaired by Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin Barau, the committee has been given two weeks to submit its findings.

The resolution followed a motion raised by on Tursday by Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP – FCT), who expressed concerns over the demolitions, particularly the impact on residents and properties such as Messrs Paulosa Estate. Kingibe argued that many demolitions appeared unjustified and deviated from due process. She called for the Senate to ensure future demolitions comply with proper procedures.

The motion was seconded by Senator Natasha Akpabio-Uduaghan (PDP – Kogi Central). Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized that demolitions should cease until investigations are completed, underscoring the importance of fairness and ensuring the procedures followed are in the best interest of the public.

Meanwhile, Wike defended his actions, stating that his administration would not be intimidated by allegations of land-grabbing. He further warned individuals with unpaid ground rents in the FCT to settle their dues or face title revocation.

In other updates, Wike announced plans to complete 12 new police divisions in the FCT by April 2025 and emphasized security as a key priority for his administration. He also handed over additional operational vehicles to security agencies to enhance their effectiveness during the upcoming holiday season.
