Senate passes bill to establish North Central Development Commission

The Nigerian Senate has passed a Bill seeking the establishment of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC).

Sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, the bill aims to address development challenges in the North Central region.

The NCDC Bill was first introduced on October 5, 2023, and after going through the second reading on February 21, 2024, it finally received Senate approval following a nine-month deliberation period, including a public hearing.

The passage occurred during a plenary session presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who noted that the Bill is in the best interest of both the zone and the entire country.

Senator Moro, in advocating for the Bill, said, “The Commission, when established, will be responsible for receiving and managing funds from the Federal Government and donors for the resettlement, rehabilitation, integration, and reconstruction of roads, among other duties.”

The Bill’s passage followed the adoption of the Senate Committee on Special Duties’ report.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary, congratulated Senator Moro and all contributors to the Bill’s success.

He expressed optimism that President Tinubu would sign the Bill into law, ensuring the development of North Central Nigeria, which includes Kogi, Niger, Benue, Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
