Senate President Announces Constitution Review Committee

In response to the escalating security challenges facing Nigeria, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has unveiled a comprehensive initiative aimed at constitutional reform.

The newly formed over 37-member constitution review committee, to be chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, will embark on a thorough examination of the 1999 constitution.

The committee’s mandate extends to critical areas such as artificial intelligence and the contentious issue of state police.

Recognizing the urgent need for effective security measures, the committee will deliberate on proposals for the establishment of state police forces among other pertinent legal reforms.

The call for state police has gained momentum in recent times, fueled by the country’s grappling with increasing incidents of kidnapping and banditry.

Elected governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), echoing the sentiments of various regional socio-political groups, have emphasized state policing as a viable solution to Nigeria’s security quagmire.

Concerns have been raised about the nation’s trajectory, with some likening it to the crisis-ridden situation in Venezuela.

States across different geopolitical zones have taken proactive steps to address security challenges within their jurisdictions.

Initiatives such as the Amotekun in the South-West, Ebube Agu in the South-East, and the Benue Guards in the North Central region reflect the growing demand for localized security apparatus.

However, these initiatives face limitations in the absence of federal endorsement and support.

One of the key issues facing these state-based security outfits is the lack of authorization to bear assault rifles, such as the AK-47, necessary for confronting well-armed criminal elements.

States argue that granting such licenses is essential for enhancing their capacity to combat armed threats effectively.

The constitution review committee’s forthcoming inauguration signifies a pivotal step towards addressing the multifaceted security challenges confronting Nigeria.

By engaging in substantive discussions on state policing and related matters, the committee aims to chart a path towards more robust and responsive security architecture aligned with the evolving needs of the nation.
