Senate Steps Down Bills for South-South Development Commission

The Nigerian Senate has stepped down a bill seeking to establish the South-South Development Commission. The bill, sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong of Cross River South, failed to pass its second reading after lawmakers unanimously declined to support it in a voice vote.

During the debate, senators argued against the need for multiple agencies, particularly given the existence of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Senators Adamu Aliero and Abdul Ningi, both from the North, voiced strong opposition, describing the proposed commission as a duplication of the NDDC and advised dropping the bill. Following a polarized voice vote, the bill was stepped down for further consultation.

In a similar move, the Senate also quashed a bill to establish the National Road Transport Council. Sponsored by Senator Yisa Ashiru Oyelola of Kwara South, the bill aimed to regulate the road transport industry and the transport profession in Nigeria.

Despite some lawmakers supporting the bill, the majority opposed it, citing the Oronsaye report’s recommendations to reduce agencies with overlapping functions.

Consequently, the bill was rejected to avoid the creation of additional redundant agencies.
