Siminalayi Fubara Expresses Depression Over Emergency Rule in Rivers State

The suspended governor of Rivers State Siminalayi Fubara, has publicly expressed feelings of depression following the declaration of emergency rule in the state by President Bola Tinubu on March 18.

The president’s decision was made in response to a prolonged political crisis in Rivers, which led to the suspension of Fubara, his deputy governor, Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state assembly for an initial period of six months. In place of the state’s elected officials, Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired naval chief, was appointed as the sole administrator.

In a recent conversation with Muslim leaders who visited him at his private residence in Port Harcourt, Fubara acknowledged the emotional toll the situation had taken on him and his team. He described the situation as one that had caused a degree of depression due to the overwhelming circumstances they were facing. However, he emphasized that despite the emotional weight of the situation, he and his team have chosen to give glory to God.

“We, as humans, might feel a bit depressed because of the situation. Maybe because of what we are seeing, but we might not understand that what is deeper and beyond us has happened,” Fubara said. He encouraged his supporters to remain steadfast, citing the belief that everything happens for a purpose and that this challenging moment may ultimately lead to a greater purpose. He reinforced the importance of patience in times of struggle, drawing a parallel to the patience shown by Noah, as described in Christian teachings.

Fubara also urged his supporters to stay calm and not to be provoked by individuals who may be fueling division and violence in the state. He emphasized the need for unity and peaceful perseverance, confident that, in the end, they would emerge stronger from the situation.
