Luke Fleurs, a defender from South Africa who played for Kaizer Chiefs in the Premier Soccer League, was shot and killed on Wednesday night during a carjacking incident.
Kaizer Chiefs confirmed Fleurs’ passing in a statement on Thursday.
It was learned that the incident happened at a gas station in a Florida neighborhood of Johannesburg.
The 24-year-old was waiting to be attended to at the petrol station when the unknown gunmen approached him.
One of the suspects is reported to have fled the scene with the deceased car after the shooting.
“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” Kaizer Chiefs stated.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
“The SAPS (South African Police Service) are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course.
“May his dear soul rest in peace.”
Fleurs was born in Cape Town. He made his National First Division debut aged 17 and made 18 league appearances in his first season of professional football.
He signed for SuperSport United on a long-term deal in summer 2018.
