Super Eagles Outclasses Cameroon 2-0 to Qualify for Quarter-Finals

It was Ademola Lookman who struck twice as Nigeria beat the continental heavyweights Cameroon 2-0 in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations 2023 tournament being hosted by Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday, January 27, Round of 16.

It was a cool Saturday evening at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, and Cameroon started brilliantly with Zambo Anguissa finding Karl Toko Ekambi, but the striker’s shot was blocked by Nigerian Captain William Truss Ekong.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria thought they had taken an early lead when Lookman’s 9th minute corner was turned in by Ajayi, but VAR disallowed it for an offside.

The Super Eagles did break through in the 36th minute after Victor Osimhen brilliantly took advantage of a Cameroon defensive mistake to set up Lookman, who finished with a classic goal.

Cameroon were unable to deal with Super Eagles’ press and conceded again just before full time when Lookman latched onto his own through ball before slotting home to make it 2-0.

The result sends Nigeria into a quarter-final clash with Angola, while Cameroon exit at the last 16 stage.

With their clinical victory in a TotalEnergies CAF AFCON heavyweight bout, Nigeria showed that they have the quality and experience to potentially end their long wait for a fourth continental title.

I look up to some great Nigerians like Chief Segun Odegbami, Aliko Dangote, John Momoh, Babatunde Raji Fashola and the late Dr Dora Akunyili; great entrepreneurs and iconic personalities whom I believe young people should emulate.
