The Super Eagles have safely returned to Nigeria following a challenging ordeal in Libya related to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The team and officials were stranded for approximately 13 hours at a Libyan airport ahead of the scheduled match on Tuesday, with photos of players sleeping on benches circulating widely and sparking public outrage.
After significant delays, Libyan authorities eventually cleared the flight for takeoff, allowing the team to return home.
Captain William Troost-Ekong took to X to express his pride in the team, stating, “BACK HOME SAFE & SOUND. Proud of this team, NAIJA SPIRIT can’t be broken. Throw at us what you want, it’s in our blood to overcome.”
He reflected on the experience, stating, “I’ve seen a lot in my 10 years with this group, but nothing like this. An experience that has brought us even closer TOGETHER.”
Victor Boniface, of Bayer Leverkusen, also shared his relief upon the team’s return, remarking, “Back to Nigeria.”
