Super Eagles star Awaziem joins Cincinnati in MLS

The Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has completed his move to FC Cincinnati of Major League Soccer from Boavista, Portugal. He will be joining fellow countryman Obinna Nwobodo in Cincinnati.

The Nigerian centre back had already drawn the attention of the Orange and Blue, who were in advanced talks to sign him during the summer transfer window.

The former FC Porto defender caught their attention because he was a key member of Boavista’s 2023–24 Liga Portugal team, making 24 matches and dishing up one assist.

According to Major League Soccer reporter Tom Bogert, the deal has now been finalised, confirming that Awaziem will be joining the USA-based club.

FC Cincinnati’s official reporter, Pat Brennan, further corroborated this, noting that Awaziem will replace the United States Men’s National Team defender Matt Miazga, who is currently sidelined with an injury.

Awaziem’s arrival bolsters Cincinnati’s defensive lineup and reunites him with fellow Super Eagles star Nwobodo, whose contract with the club runs until 2025.

This move would see Awaziem leave his fellow countrymen, Ibrahim Alhassan and Bruno Onyemeachi, at Estádio do Bessa, ending his time in Portugal since 2014.
