Panic has gripped Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, following the crash of a helicopter in a swampy area close to the town’s Naval Base.
The aircraft reportedly went down on Monday morning opposite the naval facility, with several people on board feared dead. However, authorities have yet to establish the identity of the helicopter, its operator or the exact number of occupants.
Ilaje Local Government Chairman, Maurice Oripelaye, confirmed the crash and said military equipment was recovered from the site. He added that the aircraft was extensively damaged by fire, making it difficult to immediately determine how many people had been aboard.
The incident triggered panic among residents of the coastal community, with witnesses gathering around the area as security personnel moved to secure the crash site. Some residents expressed concern over the safety implications of the incident and called for a prompt investigation to establish what happened.
The crash site has since attracted residents and security personnel, while efforts are reportedly underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the flight also remain unclear, including its point of departure, destination and whether it was carrying out a military, security or other operational assignment.
The incident comes against the backdrop of previous helicopter emergencies around the coastal waters near Igbokoda.
In February 2016, a Bristow helicopter carrying 11 people ditched into the Atlantic about 40 nautical miles from Igbokoda. All nine passengers and two crew members survived after nearby vessels and emergency responders mounted a rescue operation.
More recently, helicopter operations have remained significant around Ondo’s riverine communities because of security and offshore activities.
For now, authorities have not officially confirmed any fatalities or identified those who may have been on board the crashed aircraft. Further details are expected as security and aviation officials assess the wreckage and investigate the circumstances of the crash.
