President Bola Tinubu has called for greater unity among African military forces to effectively address insecurity and other challenges threatening the continent’s unity and stability.
He made this call on Wednesday during the official opening of the second edition of the Africa Military Games (AMGA) in Abuja, highlighting the event as a historic opportunity to promote unity, camaraderie, and military cooperation across Africa.
The Games, themed “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” mark the revival of a tradition that began over 20 years ago in Nairobi, Kenya. Speaking at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized that no single nation could tackle its security challenges in isolation. “Our collective safety and the well-being of our people demand that we stand together, shoulder to shoulder, as one united Africa,” he stated. Tinubu also highlighted the significance of the Games in strengthening Africa’s collective security efforts.
“This event is more than just a gathering of outstanding athletes; it is a powerful reminder of the cooperation that binds our military institutions,” Tinubu said. “Today, we reaffirm the potential we have when we stand united—not just as neighbours, but as protectors of a continent that relies on your bravery, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment.”
The President commended the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General C.G. Musa, and the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), Major General M. Abdullahi, for their efforts in reviving the Games. He also underscored the importance of sports in promoting physical fitness, discipline, and resilience among military personnel—qualities essential for addressing Africa’s diverse security challenges.
“Sports not only keep us physically fit, but also instill core values such as integrity, excellence, and discipline. When our men and women are fit, they are better prepared to face their duties with resilience and confidence,” Tinubu said. He further emphasized that unity is crucial in overcoming the continent’s security threats.
Earlier, General Musa explained that the second edition of the Games is not just a celebration of athletic prowess but also a symbol of the solidarity that exists among Africa’s armed forces. He encouraged the 1,625 athletes and officials from across the continent to embrace sportsmanship as they compete.
Gen. Musa also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with other African armed forces, working together to safeguard the region’s territorial integrity. Major General Maikano Abdullahi, President of OSMA, spoke about the Games’ alignment with the vision of OSMA’s founding members to promote unity, friendship, and solidarity among Africa’s military forces. He praised the support of President Tinubu and the Nigerian government, stating that the Games provide a platform to showcase the rich heritage and talents of Africa’s armed forces. Abdullahi urged participants to compete with both determination and fairness, reinforcing the bond that unites all African military forces.
