Tinubu Arrives Brazil for Heads of State’s G20 Summit

President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20), which will take place on November 18 and 19.

According to a statement from the presidency, President Tinubu was warmly received by Ambassador Breno Costa of Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations upon his arrival.

Accompanying the President are several key members of his cabinet, including Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Idi Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development; Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity; Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security; and Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.

During the summit, President Tinubu is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with global leaders, focusing on advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms. The summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will bring together leaders from the world’s largest economies to address pressing global issues.

This year’s summit will revolve around the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” with key discussions on combating global poverty and hunger, energy transition, sustainable development, and the reform of global governance institutions. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga noted that President Tinubu is expected to advocate strongly for the reform of international institutions, a cause Nigeria has consistently championed.

The President’s agenda includes pushing for reforms in global governance, particularly advocating for a permanent seat for Nigeria on the United Nations Security Council, a position the country has long pursued.

Additionally, President Tinubu is set to hold discussions on advancing Nigeria’s development in sectors such as agriculture, energy, and infrastructure.
