In a nationwide broadcast marking Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary, President Bola Tinubu has asserted that his administration is achieving unprecedented success in the battle against terrorism and banditry. He emphasized that true food security can only be attained once the threats posed by these groups are neutralized.
Reflecting on the challenges faced when his administration took office 16 months ago, Tinubu described the state of the nation as precarious. “The economy faced many headwinds, and our physical security was highly impaired,” he noted. He articulated the crucial decision made at that time: to pursue reform for progress and prosperity rather than continuing with the status quo, which he deemed unsustainable.
On the security front, Tinubu proudly declared, “I am happy to announce that our administration is winning the war on terror and banditry.” He stated that the primary objective is to eliminate threats posed by Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and all forms of violent extremism.
Citing recent successes, the President revealed that over 300 Boko Haram insurgents and bandit leaders have been eliminated by Nigerian troops within the past year. “We have restored peace to hundreds of communities in the North, and thousands of our people have been able to return home,” he reported.
Acknowledging that this mission is ongoing, Tinubu reiterated the commitment of security agencies to swiftly conclude operations in troubled regions. He expressed optimism that once peace is restored, farmers will return to their lands, leading to increased food production and a decline in food costs. “I promise you, we shall not falter on this,” he stated.
The fight against terrorism has been a significant focus for Nigeria since the return to civilian rule in 1999, and Tinubu’s remarks reflect a renewed determination to address these enduring challenges as part of his administration’s broader agenda for national security and economic stability.
