Tinubu honours Saro-Wiwa, other Ogoni martyrs

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and healing among the diverse ethnic groups that form Nigeria. In a special message marking the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day, President Tinubu expressed solidarity with the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) and all Ogoni citizens, honoring those who sacrificed their lives in defense of the Ogoni people’s rights and interests.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said that this year’s commemoration, themed “After Price, Comes Prise,” symbolizes a collective commitment to acknowledging past pains while striving for a more hopeful and prosperous future.

“We honor their memory by recognizing the sacrifices they made and pledging to build a future of peace, justice, and sustainable development for all communities, especially those in the Niger Delta,” President Tinubu said.

He further emphasized his administration’s resolve to address historical grievances and work towards a unified, prosperous nation for future generations. “This vision will be realized through constructive engagement and mutual respect,” the President added.

The oil industry’s history in Ogoniland dates back to 1958 when oil was first commercially discovered in Oloibiri. Over the years, Ogoni leaders fought to protect their environment from the devastating effects of oil exploration. Their efforts, however, faced violent repression, culminating in the tragic execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders in 1995.

“As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us honor their legacy by committing to a future where such injustices are no longer tolerated, and where the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected,” President Tinubu concluded.
