In a powerful display of unity, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted the leadership of the Nigerian Senate for an Iftar (breaking of the Ramadan fast) at the new State House Banquet Hall in Abuja on Wednesday evening.
The event, attended by top government officials, underscored the ongoing spirit of cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of government.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking at the occasion, stressed the importance of political unity and collaboration among leaders to consolidate the administration’s reform agenda.
He emphasized that Nigeria has reached a pivotal moment where President Tinubu’s bold leadership, marked by visionary policies and decisive actions, is now poised to deliver lasting results.
Highlighting the recent positive changes in the economy, including falling food prices, reduced petrol costs, and stability in the foreign exchange market, Shettima described these as clear evidence of the administration’s achievements.
He projected that Nigeria’s economy would grow at a rate of 4.3% to 4.6% this year, noting that the positive impact of President Tinubu’s leadership would be recognized by future generations.
“We are at a crossroads where your courageous decisions, Mr. President, are paving the way for real change,” Shettima said, urging continued political collaboration to ensure that these gains endure.
The Vice President also expressed gratitude to the Senate for its collaborative approach since the current leadership took office, reinforcing the need for unity across party lines. He urged the lawmakers to see themselves as part of one large family, working toward a common national destiny. “Though we may sleep in different rooms, we are bound by the same purpose,” Shettima said, stressing that national unity should transcend political divisions.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio thanked President Tinubu for his steadfast support of the Senate, particularly in approving key legislation passed by the chamber. Akpabio affirmed the Senate’s continued commitment to working alongside the executive to ensure the successful implementation of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“We stand united, not just across party lines but as a single force pushing towards the betterment of our nation,” Akpabio declared. He also prayed for divine guidance and strength for both President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, wishing them wisdom and good health as they continue their service to the nation.
Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua of Katsina State offered prayers for the unity and prosperity of Nigeria, invoking divine wisdom for the country’s leaders.
The Iftar was attended by several prominent senators, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Minority Leader Abba Moro, former Senate President Ahmed Lawan, and Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno, as well as other distinguished members of the National Assembly.
