Tinubu mourns ex-Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of India following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

A statement released by the State House on Friday, signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Singh as a visionary leader whose contributions to Nigeria-India relations remain profound. Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extends his deepest condolences to the government and people of India on the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,” the statement said. “Singh, who served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, died on Thursday at the age of 92.”

President Tinubu highlighted the historic significance of Singh’s official visit to Nigeria in 2007, during which he became one of the few global leaders to address a joint session of the National Assembly. Tinubu also paid tribute to Singh’s efforts in strengthening Nigeria-India relations, noting that his diplomatic initiatives continue to serve as a benchmark in the history of bilateral ties between the two nations.

The President specifically mentioned the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between Nigeria and India during Singh’s tenure, which has since flourished, bringing political and economic benefits to both countries. He also praised Singh’s contributions to enhancing cooperation in areas such as defense, trade, culture, education, health, science, technology, and ICT.

In closing, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the people of India for honoring the life and legacy of this distinguished economist and selfless leader. He saluted Singh’s role in guiding India’s economic reforms during challenging global times and prayed that the late Prime Minister’s unwavering dedication to service would continue to inspire the people of India.
