Tinubu mourns veteran broadcaster, Anike Agbaje-Williams

President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the death of veteran broadcaster Anike Agbaje-Williams, lauding her as a trailblazer in both the Nigerian and African broadcast industry.

Agbaje-Williams, the first African to appear on television, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, in Ibadan at the age of 88, according to her family.

In a condolence message issued on Friday, signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his sympathies to Agbaje-Williams’ immediate family, professional colleagues, and the broader media industry. He praised her pioneering role in shaping Nigeria’s media landscape.

“Chief Anike Agbaje-Williams was a trailblazer and one of the pioneering figures of the broadcast industry in Nigeria and Africa. She made history as the first woman in Africa to grace the Television and Radio as an announcer and broadcaster,” President Tinubu said.

Agbaje-Williams achieved a historic milestone in 1959 when she became the first face to appear on Africa’s first television station, Western Nigeria Television. She also became the first voice heard on Africa’s first commercial radio station, Western Nigeria Broadcasting Service.

Born on October 23, 1936, Agbaje-Williams retired from active service in 1986 but continued to inspire many in the industry through her remarkable legacy.

Tinubu commended her professionalism and enduring impact, stating that her example would continue to inspire future generations of media practitioners.

“Her professional example will continue to inspire current and future generations of media practitioners. May God comfort her family members and loved ones,” he added.

Agbaje-Williams’ passing has sparked tributes from media professionals and institutions, acknowledging her groundbreaking contributions and achievements in the broadcast sector.
