President Bola Tinubu has announced that his administration subsidized road transport on 144 routes across Nigeria to ease travel expenses during the festive season. In his Christmas message, Tinubu emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing the financial burden on Nigerians during this period of economic challenges.
The subsidy, which included a 50% slash in interstate transport fares and free train rides nationwide from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, was part of a broader initiative to ensure citizens could reunite with loved ones for the holidays. “This gesture reflects our determination to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians,” Tinubu stated.
Passengers at various bus terminals and train stations expressed appreciation for the initiative, although some called for more long-term solutions to high transportation costs and inflation.
