Tobi Amusan Returns to the Hurdles in Diamond League Season Opener in Xiamen

Nigeria’s sprint queen and world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, is set to make her highly anticipated return to the event today at the season-opening meet of the 2025 Wanda Diamond League in Xiamen, China.

This marks Amusan’s first appearance over the hurdles since her shock exit at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she crashed out in the semifinal round. Her comeback has been quietly brewing off the spotlight — but Saturday’s clash on the tracks signals her intent to reclaim her place among the sport’s elite.

Amusan, a three-time Diamond League trophy winner, headlines a fierce field of global talent at the Egret Stadium, competing in one of the most hotly anticipated events of the meet. She will start in lane eight, looking to make a strong impression after opening her season with a flat 100m win last month at the Velocity Fest 16 in Kingston, Jamaica, clocking a season’s best of 11.28s.

During the off-season, Amusan trained under the watchful eye of legendary coach Glen Mills — famed mentor of sprint icon Usain Bolt — a move many believe signals a renewed hunger and sharpened edge.

Currently ranked 13th in the world, the 28-year-old Nigerian faces a stacked field in Xiamen. Her challengers include:

Devynne Charlton (Bahamas) – world indoor record holder in the 60m hurdles and ranked 7th globally

Danielle Williams (Jamaica) – reigning world champion

Grace Stark (USA) – current world leader with a sizzling 12.51s

Tonea Marshall and Nia Ali (USA) – seasoned powerhouses in the event

The meeting record, a blistering 12.45s, is held by Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who set the mark at this same venue last year.

The Xiamen Diamond League, now in its third edition, will unfold under the lights at the state-of-the-art Egret Stadium, featuring nine track and seven field events as part of the main program. Beyond Amusan’s return, fans can look forward to appearances by global track and field stars including:

Mondo Duplantis (Sweden) – world record-holding pole vaulter

Yaroslava Mahuchikh (Ukraine) – high jump world champion

Grant Holloway (USA) – hurdles powerhouse

Letsile Tebogo (Botswana) – Olympic champion and 200m prodigy

As the 2025 Diamond League season launches, all eyes are on Amusan — not just for a race, but for a statement. After the heartbreak of Paris, today could mark the first step in a powerful redemption arc.
