A petrol tanker explosion in Niger State on Saturday has left many residents feared dead and others severely injured. The incident occurred at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway, when the tanker, which had spilled its contents onto the road, exploded after a crowd of onlookers rushed to scoop the fuel.
According to reports, shortly after the tanker spilled its fuel, locals rushed to the scene to collect the liquid, unaware of the danger. The explosion that followed resulted in the deaths of many of those who were scooping fuel, while others who were farther away from the tanker sustained various degrees of burns.
Bologi Ibrahim, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, confirmed the tragic incident and conveyed the governor’s shock and deep sympathy for the victims’ families. The governor has expressed his heartfelt condolences, praying that the souls of the deceased may rest in peace and wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
Governor Bago also urged caution among road users, emphasizing the importance of safety and responsibility. He called for heightened security in the area and directed relevant authorities to ensure that order was restored, while humanitarian efforts were underway to assist those affected.
