In a continued effort to strengthen national security and combat organised crime, the Nigeria Police Force has intensified its crackdown on gunrunning and illegal firearm proliferation.
This has resulted in the recovery of 191 prohibited firearms, 4,255 rounds of various ammunition, and the arrest of 63 suspects across the country.
A notable success in this operation was the arrest of eight suspects involved in a gunrunning syndicate operating in Plateau State and its surrounding areas.
Acting on credible intelligence, the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) apprehended the syndicate members and discovered a significant cache of arms hidden inside a vehicle doormat.
The seized items included 8 fabricated AK-47 rifles, 4 fabricated revolver guns, 4 fabricated semi-automatic pistols, 11 AK-47 magazines, 1,105 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and 12 rounds of 7.88mm live ammunition.
In a separate incident, Amos Sunday Gyang was arrested in Plateau State for possessing a semi-automatic pistol he claimed to have found in his rented apartment but failed to report to authorities.
The police have emphasized that the unlawful possession of firearms is a criminal offense, urging citizens to immediately report any discovery of weapons to law enforcement.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to protecting lives and property, pledging to relentlessly tackle security threats. The Nigeria Police Force continues to call on the public to support its efforts by providing valuable intelligence to authorities.
The Force’s Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, assured the public that the police will maintain their efforts to dismantle criminal networks and ensure a safer Nigeria.
