A road accident occurred on Thursday night at the Secretariat Junction in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, when a truck carrying both humans and cows lost control and plummeted off an overhead bridge, leaving 14 people hospitalized.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, which was traveling from Adamawa State to Lagos, suddenly veered off the bridge and fell to the ground below. The crash was described as severe, with multiple injuries and significant damage to the vehicle.
The driver of the truck, identified as Muhammad Mandir Yusuf, was transporting 32 people along with several cows when the incident occurred. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander for the state, Mr. Maxwell Lede, no fatalities were recorded in the accident. However, the 14 injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Emergency responders, including the FRSC and the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), arrived at the scene quickly to manage the situation. They worked together to control traffic, which had been disrupted due to the accident. The impact of the crash caused the outward service lane connecting the Secretariat to the expressway to be temporarily closed, with traffic diverted to the left lane.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, though speeding and reckless driving are suspected factors. The victims of the crash were taken to Plateau State Specialist Hospital, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, and Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for medical attention.
Authorities are continuing efforts to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow in the area.
